Mom Edition - How to Prepare for Photos
Having your photo taken can feel a bit vulnerable, can't it? Over my 20+ years of capturing portraits, the one thing that stands out above everything else is how much your inner feeling affects the final picture. Honestly, the key to a portrait you'll adore is feeling genuinely comfortable and happy in that moment. So, I'd love to walk you through some simple ways we can help you feel amazing and truly shine.
2 - Choose Clothes That Make You Feel Wonderful: What you wear plays such a big role in how comfortable and confident you feel during your session! So, the most important guideline is simply this: choose an outfit that genuinely makes you feel good about yourself.
When you're coordinating outfits for the whole family, it can sometimes be helpful to start with the person whose outfit might take the most thought – and let's be honest, often that's Mom! Finding something you truly love and feel radiant in can make coordinating everyone else feel much easier. Think about styles, fabrics, and cuts that feel comfortable and allow you to move and relax naturally.
Rather than focusing on hiding parts of yourself you might feel sensitive about, I warmly encourage you to celebrate what you love! Think about your favorite features – maybe you have sparkling eyes, a graceful neckline, or strong, lovely arms? Choose something that helps you embrace and highlight those beautiful parts of you. It’s all about honoring yourself and feeling great in your own skin. Ultimately, wear what feels authentically you.
1 - No baggage - Getting everyone ready and out the door for a photo session can be an adventure in itself! So first, just acknowledge that you made it – well done! Your purse or diaper bag is absolutely fine, of course. What I gently encourage is letting go of the mental 'bags' – the to-do lists, the traffic stress, the rush of getting here. Now that you've arrived, take a deep breath. You're here, your loved ones are here, and the most hectic part is truly over.
These sessions are designed to be a relaxed, happy space, focused on encouraging smiles and snuggles. We want you to simply enjoy being together, and we'll be there to capture those lovely, connected moments.
3 - A Little Self-Care Goes a Long Way: Consider treating yourself to something that makes you feel refreshed and cared for in the days leading up to your session. It's amazing how a little 'me time' can help you feel more relaxed and confident when you arrive! This could be something simple like planning your haircut or color about a week beforehand so it feels settled and just right. Or maybe it's the quiet ritual of painting your nails, or even indulging in a soothing massage. These small acts aren't just about looking good; they're about feeling good. When you feel relaxed and pampered (like how lovely and loose your shoulders feel after a massage!), that ease and confidence naturally shine through in your photos. Think of it as a gentle way to prepare yourself to fully enjoy the moment.
